Recently I was given the opportunity to experience Zorgvliet Wine Estate - a winery positioned in the hub of the Cape winelands near Stellenbosch. Over a period of time I have experienced this winery only through seeing its photos, tasting its wines and word of mouth. Nothing could have prepared me for the beauty of the Banhoek Valley, I felt like I had just stepped into my own perfect post-card world. The views surrounding the winery were the perfect colour green coupled with the clearest skies which complemented the architecture of the winery elegantly.
One of the exciting activities that I enjoyed was the tour of the winery where we got to find out how the Zorgvliet wines are produced. Boasting a state of the art cellar which plays host to this delicious liquid of the gods - I began to understand the reason behind the many awards that this winery has received. The highlight for me was the wine tasting that we had in the actual cellar - we got to drink the Zorgvliet wines straight from the huge stainless steel tanks in the cellar.
Next was the tour of the vineyards with Zorgvliet Wines' viticulturist explaining to us what goes into producing these award-winning Zorgvliet wines - exclusive to the Zorgvliet winery. Thanks to the bumpy ride on the back of his bakkie - I can finally say I have climbed the Simonsberg Mountain. There is a lot of technique that goes into wine production and it all starts with planting the vineyards in the right way. From the mountain top that we were on, we could see the difference in colour that each cultivar has. What a wonderful experience!
My other highlight was the luxury accommodation offered by the Zorgvliet winery. The rooms ooze comfort and leisure: an elegant en-suite bathroom, charming deco and of course the breathtaking view. It's a special experience waking up and opening your curtains to the Cape winelands. This really was a special experience and I left feeling like a special person.
